MICRODERMABRASION
When you get to the point where physical exfoliators and chemical peel acids are doing very little or nothing for your skin condition – whether it be; Hyperpigmentation, acne scars uneven skin texture, dead cell, or clogged pores – it might be time to take more serious measures. In my practice as a skin consultant I would at this point recommend microdermabrasion, this is one professional skin treatment that promises clearer, healthier, radiant skin in no time at all. The results are usually astonishing for me every single time! and also for my clients on whom these procedures are performed.
Moving to definitions, microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive and non-ablative procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions.
The procedure uses a special applicator with an abrasive surface -diamond tip and crystal tip, to gently sand away the thick outer layer of the skin, thereby rejuvenating it.
There are different microdermabrasion techniques but the diamond microdermabrasion is my favorite technique.
Microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most people with different skin types and tones. Anybody with the following skin conditions listed below may need to undergo the procedure to treat their skin:
1. hyperpigmentation
2. enlarged pores
3. blackheads
4. acne and acne scars
5. dull skin complexion
6. Sun damaged skin
7. uneven skin tone and texture
8. Wrinkles and lines
How to Prepare for microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure. All things considered, there’s very little preparation on the part of the client undergoing this procedure. At Ruvie Beauty Clinic clients are normally informed on the aftercare points to ensure successful treatments without negative after effects or skin reactions. They are required to stay indoors a few days after procedure to avoid direct sunlight on the new skin which emerges after procedure. The new skin is usually tender and may burn from direct sunlight. Also, there are a few skin treatments that should be avoided before microdermabrasion which the aesthetician will inform the client before the actual procedure.
Contrary to recently popularized trends from bloggers and ad companies for people to perform microdermabrasion on themselves at home using professional microdermabrasion equipment, I would strongly advise against this, mainly because of the dangers of Dermabrasion burns. In spite of the fact that this procedure is minimally invasive, it still has a danger of being overused on the skin, resulting in bruising of the skin, this may lead to scarring. This is a procedure that should be left to professionals only.
Also there is always a need to discuss your skin concerns and conditions with a skincare professional to find out the right treatment for you. Microdermabrasion may not be the right fit for you. During a skin consultancy session, you are required to discuss any past cosmetic procedures and surgeries, as well as allergies and medical conditions with your aesthetician. This will help to increase the success rate of your treatment.
How is microdermabrasion Procedure Performed
At Ruvie Beauty Clinic, Microdermabrasion is performed in our facial treatment room. It usually takes about 45-60 minutes for one session. It’s typically performed by certified skincare professionals.
It’s not necessary to use anesthesia or a numbing agent for microdermabrasion.
During the procedure, client is required to lie down on our facial table. Our Clinical aesthetician will prepare the client for the procedure (for instance removing all makeup where necessary) then proceed to use a handheld device with a special tip to sand away the outer layer of skin in the targeted areas. At the end of the treatment, a moisturizer as well as sunscreen will be applied to the client’s skin.
There are a few different ways to do the procedure, based on the specific device used:
Diamond Microdermabrasion
A diamond-tip handpiece is designed to gently exfoliate dead cells in your skin. At the same time, it will suction them off immediately.
The depth of the abrasion may be affected by the pressure applied on the hand-piece, the particular tip being used as well as how long the suction is allowed to remain on the skin. This type of microdermabrasion applicator is usually stronger than the crystal and more effective (but again that is a matter of opinion).
Crystal microdermabrasion
Crystal microdermabrasion uses a crystal-tip to rub away outer layers of the skin. Like the diamond-tip handpiece, dead skin cells are suctioned off right away.
The different types of crystals that may be used include aluminum oxide and sodium bicarbonate.
Are there Side effects of microdermabrasion?
Oh Yes! there are side effects in this procedure. Common side effects of microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness in some cases rashes and itching. These generally go away within a few hours after treatment. Often times the moisturizers used minimizes dry and flaky skin. The mild burns on the face are mostly caused by the suction process during the procedure. If the aesthetician is very light handed and careful this particular side effect hardly occurs
There is very little downtime after microdermabrasion. You should be able to resume your daily activities immediately as long as you stay indoors a couple of days and away from direct sunlight.
This is one skin treatment that gives you a dramatic result, always. For most clients, their complexion is immediately lighter, younger-looking and the texture of their skin softer and smoother.
